Individual Therapy services

In individual counseling, the client and therapist (and caregivers), determine goals for counseling to work through. For children, individual counseling involves play, learning how to communicate feelings, and psychoeducational pieces, which is later taught to parents for continuity of care.

Jamie is a Registered Play Therapist and utilizes play and expressive arts throughout her sessions when deemed appropriate.

What does therapy look like?

For teens, counseling typically involves talk therapy, mindfulness education and other types of therapeutic outlets that are determined based upon the client’s need.

Teletherapy is available in the state of Missouri upon request after the client has been established in person.

I believe that therapy is not a one-size-fits-all all, so what may work for you or your child may not be the same as a friend’s therapy sessions. Some people benefit more from talk therapy, while others benefit from psychoeducation and play. Most sessions last 45-50 minutes.

Jamie is a Registered Play Therapist and incorporates a variety of play and creative therapy techniques.

What is your therapy approach?

This depends on a lot of different things, including the presenting issue, treatment, and progress. Initially, in order to show progress a child will be seen weekly or bi-weekly, then moved to monthly.

We work together to set goals, monitor progress and determine a best course of action.

How many sessions will we need?

Jamie sees clients by appointment only Monday through Thursday.

Some before and after school appointments are available but are limited to first-come first-serve. If you are an established client, you are able to self-schedule through the client portal.

Chelsea has evening availability during the school year and can be contacted via email.

What are your hours?

Jamie accepts United Healthcare, SOME Medicaid and Aetna.

We are able to provide a superbill for you to submit for out-of-network benefits if necessary. We are able to accept HSA/FSA cards.

Chelsea accepts most insurance.

Do you accept insurance?

It is required to give 24 hours notice for cancellations per office policy. If there is less than 24 hours notice or the client is a no-show, there will be a full session fee charge. A no-show fee is applied after 15 minutes into the scheduled session if the client has not arrived.

Please know, I try to be flexible in times of inclement weather, illness, or family emergencies. We also may be able to move sessions to virtual if needed.

What is your cancellation policy?

What is Play Therapy?

Jamie is a Registered Play Therapist through the Association for Play Therapy.

Play therapy is a structured, theoretically based approach to therapy that builds on the normal communicative and learning processes of children (Carmichael, 2006; Landreth, 2002; O'Connor & Schaefer, 1983). The curative powers inherent in play are used in many ways. Therapists strategically utilize play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings (Gil, 1991). In play therapy, toys are like the child's words and play is the child's language (Landreth, 2002). Through play, therapists may help children learn more adaptive behaviors when there are emotional or social skills deficits (Pedro-Carroll & Reddy, 2005). The positive relationship that develops between therapist and child during play therapy sessions can provide a corrective emotional experience necessary for healing (Moustakas, 1997). Play therapy may also be used to promote cognitive development and provide insight about and resolution of inner conflicts or dysfunctional thinking in the child (O'Connor & Schaefer, 1983; Reddy, Files-Hall, & Schaefer, 2005).- Association for Play Therapy
